GST TOOL GUIDE

What is a GST Calculator?

A GST calculator is an online tool that helps estimate the Goods and Services Tax amount on a taxable value or extract the tax component from a GST-inclusive price. Businesses, ecommerce sellers, retailers and customers can use it to understand the taxable value, tax amount and total price.

Enter a price, choose whether GST should be added or removed, select the applicable rate and choose the tax type. For an intra-state supply, the tool displays CGST and SGST separately. For an inter-state supply, it displays IGST.

How to use this GST Calculator

  1. Choose the calculation type: Select Add GST when you have a price before tax, or Remove GST when the entered price already includes GST.
  2. Select the GST rate: Choose the rate applicable to your goods or services. Use Custom rate only when you know the correct rate.
  3. Select the tax type: Choose Intra-state for a qualifying supply within one state or Inter-state for a qualifying supply between states.
  4. Enter the amount: Add the taxable price or GST-inclusive price in rupees.
  5. Read the breakup: Review taxable value, total GST and the CGST/SGST or IGST split.

GST calculation formulas

GST on an exclusive priceGST = Taxable value × GST rate ÷ 100
Price including GSTTaxable value + GST amount
Tax from an inclusive priceGST = Inclusive price × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate)
Taxable value from inclusive priceInclusive price − GST amount

For the calculator's simple tax split, CGST and SGST are each half of the total GST for an intra-state supply. The full GST amount is shown as IGST for an inter-state supply. Actual tax treatment depends on the applicable GST law and transaction facts.

GST calculation example

If the taxable value is ₹1,000 and the selected GST rate is 18%, the estimated GST is ₹180 and the price including GST is ₹1,180.

Taxable value₹1,000.00
GST rate18%
Total GST₹180.00
CGST (intra-state example)₹90.00
SGST (intra-state example)₹90.00
Price including GST₹1,180.00

CGST, SGST and IGST: what is the difference?

  • CGST: Central Goods and Services Tax, generally levied by the Central Government along with SGST on an intra-state taxable supply.
  • SGST: State Goods and Services Tax, generally levied by the relevant State Government along with CGST on an intra-state taxable supply.
  • IGST: Integrated Goods and Services Tax, generally applicable to inter-state supplies and certain other supplies under GST law.

Whether a supply is intra-state or inter-state is determined under GST place-of-supply rules, not simply by the seller's preferred selection. Check the rules for your transaction.
